Independence Day is a memorable day in the history of every nation. Bangladesh like many proud nations has Independence Day which is observed on 26th March. The day remains a public holiday. It commemorates the country’s declaration of independence from Pakistan in the late hours of 25 March 1971. Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman, the father of the nation, declared the independence of Bangladesh during the early hours of 26 March 1971. The guerilla struggle officially began then. People from all walks of life took part in the war to liberate East Pakistan from West Pakistan and to establish a new nation called Bangladesh at the cost of their lives. Finally, they gained independence through a nine-month guerrilla war against the Pakistani army and their collaborators (commonly known as Razakars in Bangla which resulted in the loss of about 3 million lives. The Forces of Bangladesh, later with military support from India and the USSR defeated the Pakistani Army. The war ended when Pakistani soldiers surrendered with 93 thousand soldiers on 16 December 1971. Now, Independence Day celebrates the history and tradition of Bangladesh with parades, political speeches, fairs, concerts, ceremonies, and various other private and public events. Print and electronic media broadcast special supplements and patriotic songs in honor of Independence Day. The Day begins with thirty-one gun salutes. The main streets are decorated with national flags. Different political parties along with different private and public socioeconomic organizations undertake programs.
